Are there any side-effects?
PrEP is very safe.
Most people taking PrEP do not have any side effects.
Some people may notice feeling sick, a loss of appetite, bloating, diarrhoea or headache. If you do get these, they tend to settle quickly.
What about my kidneys?
Very rarely PrEP can affect how well the kidneys work. This is more likely if you have existing kidney problems or other medical problems, such as diabetes or high blood pressure. You will have regular blood tests to check your kidneys whilst on PrEP. A more ‘kidney friendly’ PrEP pill can be prescribed if needed.
What about my bones?
PrEP can rarely make the bones less strong. Tell your Doctor or Nurse if you have broken a bone recently or have a family history of weak bones. A more ‘bone friendly’ PrEP pill can be prescribed if needed, or if you are under 18.
What if the double dose makes me feel sick, or gives me side-effects?
If the double dose makes you feel sick, or gives you tummy ache, then take 2 pills 6 hours apart, your first pill being 24 hours before sex or injecting. Continue to take a pill every day you are having sex, and for 2 days after if have a penis, or 7 days after if you have a vagina or inject. You may find it better to stay on daily dosing if you can’t take double doses of PrEP.
If you take any other medications, including vitamins, herbal remedies or gym supplements, please tell your PrEP doctor or nurse.
