Actinomyces is a family of bacteria. This bacteria usually lives harmlessly on the lining in the vagina. It can also live on the lining of the mouth, throat and digestive system. The bacteria is usually harmless and only poses a problem if the tissue lining becomes damaged by injury or disease, allowing the bacteria to penetrate into tissue and cause infection.
